Quotient Academic Cofounder, Professor Sir Mike Stratton, Awarded Royal Society Medal
Professor Sir Mike Stratton, one of Quotient’s academic cofounders, has been awarded the Royal Medal (Biological) by the Royal Society for his outstanding contributions to cancer genomics research. Mike’s pioneering contributions include establishing the landmark Cancer Genome Project and the discovery of pivotal cancer-causing genes like BRAF and BRCA2. His foundational research has not only transformed the understanding of cancer but also played a crucial role in shaping the field of genomics.
The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world’s most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. Each year, one medal is awarded for the most important contribution to the advancement of “Natural Knowledge” in the biological sciences on the recommendation of the Council of the Society.
Professor Sir Mike Stratton, Academic Cofounder of Quotient, Senior Group Leader and former Director of the Wellcome Sanger Institute, stated, “The news of the Award immediately brought into my head the assembly of faces and voices of colleagues I’ve had in over 40 years in scientific research … I am deeply grateful for the multitude of conversations we have had together, the furrowed brows at difficult junctures, the sparkling eyes at moments of epiphany, and the profound, generally unspoken, collective commitment to the extraordinary work of the human imagination that is the pursuit of knowledge about the natural world and its capability to bring benefits and hope to people with cancer.”
